Scotland days

Last weekend I had finally found the time in my busy schedule to travel to Scotland to visit my family. This is something I have wanted to do since the day I arrived in Belfast. It turned out that I had chosen the perfect weekend to go on this trip because the weather was absolutely amazing. And since I knew that I would be outside a lot, I was very happy with my timing.

On Thursday evening I landed at Glasgow Airport where my cousin came to pick me up and take me to their house. Having family in different places in the world turns out to be very helpful when you are a poor student on Erasmus ;)
They had made a planning for the whole weekend filled with places they wanted me to see. On Friday my uncle took me to the Stirling Castle and the William Wallace monument. Both were very interesting places to visit. The Stirling Castle is a beautiful castle that was home to the Scottish kings since the twelfth century. It told the story about the families that have lived there for centuries and the importance it played in the Scottish history. More beautiful and interesting than the castle, to me, was the view, from the hill it was built on, over the city and the mountains.

One thing I could see from the castle was the Wallace monument. This monument was built in memory of William Wallace who fought to save Scotland from the English occupation in the First Scottish was of Independence. From the top of the monument there was an amazing view as well. The view is starting to become a theme in this post and I must note that the Scottish landscape is the most impressive I have seen. On Saturday we went to the Scottish Highlands and drove through the mountains. This meant that we spent almost all day in a car and looking at the mountains and the lake. We made a few stops on our journey. With the first being, Loch Lomond, the biggest lake in Scotland. We took a couple of pictures and continued our trip.

The second stop was The Nevis Range Mountain where we went up with a gondola. This is a very popular spot for mountain bikers to go up and cycle down. This was very impressive to see, but I am very glad we just went up to admire the view…again. After all this excitement we went a bit further on the road and found a good spot to take a break. Right in the middle of all the mountains we set up a barbecue and had something to eat before going back home. This is something I recommend to everyone, if you have the chance. The weather was good, the food was even better, but the company was the best. I don’t see my family often so for me this was a great opportunity to meet up with them.

After this lovely weekend it was time to go home, very early on a Monday morning. And I have learned something…On an airport this is a very busy time. Busy to the point I almost missed my flight and had to run through the airport to find my gate. Not a great way to end a trip, but I did not miss the flight so I am happy.
